Description

Hydro-Québec plans to completely dismantle the old generating station in Tasiujaq.

The project includes a phase to dismantle the buildings, followed by an environmental soil restoration phase. Dismantling of the buildings is scheduled to start in June 2025, while the environmental restoration of the site, including the excavation of contaminated soils and their treatment using an aerated biodegradation process, will span three and seven years. The project is slated to be finished by fall 2032 at the latest.

Hydro-Québec plans to dismantle the main building housing the generator bay, fuel room, workshops, storage containers, residual hazardous materials shelters, fuel tank and electrical transformer substation during the building dismantling phase. Hydro-Québec will recover some pieces of strategic power generation equipment. The proponent intends to re-use this equipment in other facilities in the region. Other surplus materials and goods will be dismantled in such a way so that they can be reused or recycled. Some equipment will be moved to the new hybrid generating station, while other pieces will be shipped to Hydro-Québec’s sorting centre in Saint-Jérôme. Discussions are underway with the Northern Village of Tasiujaq to identify certain materials and equipment that could be repurposed locally. For example, the main garage has been donated to the community and will be kept intact.
