Decision
The Commission has decided to authorize the project under certain conditions.
Description
The project aims to construct a new access road that links the village and the airport, while ensuring that it is safe and complies with standards. According to the proponent, the chosen option (4d) is the one that better takes into account the needs of the community, road safety, costs, and environmental impacts. The project also includes the relocation of a road section near the runway to comply with clearance requirements of airport zone. The new section would connect with the existing Makivik road and maintain the link to the cemetery, the sewage water basins and the quarry. The existing road will be closed (as it is unsafe) and the access limited.
The proposed road realignment has been discussed with the community. Final plans need to be presented to local actors. Surveys were conducted to make sure that no threatened wildlife species or archaeological sites (or potential) are present.
Calendar
The new road will be constructed in the summer of 2015.
